Noctambules, Trudelhaus Baden, November 2023- January 2024

The piece “Noctambules” begins with Edward Hopper’s 1942 painting “Nighthawks”. It is decomposed into a coarse grid of 360 coloured squares which are then mapped by groups of three, row by row, onto fifteen pillars. The intention is that the pillars themselves become the noctambules - "lifeforms” enveloped by darkness, together yet lonesome. To bring them alive each pillar acts independently from the others, randomly rotating into its next state. This rough downward scan renders the physical vertical dimension as a temporal property. Despite "Noctambules" being non-figurative, the melancholic feel of Hopper's work is retained by using the original colour palette.
Part of group show "Construire le regard" with Claude Cortinovis, Virginie Delannoy, Noémie Doge and Carmen Perrin, with further contributions from Esther Amrein, Christian Greutmann, Sadhyo Niederberger, Arlette Ochsner and Lorenz Olivier Schmid.
